I think the nose is a matter of opinion. I have a pointy nose and think that flat ones are more attractive! As far as jawline, I think that society finds that more attractive as the jawline usually shows on people that are thin/in shape/etc. Whereas it's not as visable in overweight people. I think it's one of those things in which if you have curly hair you want straight and if you have straight you want curly. Perhaps if you have a flatter nose and an undefined jawline, you are pay attention more all of the protruding noses and jawlines in the media and not the others. I don't find your statement to be true, but could stem from your own self conciousness or something? My sil has beautiful brown hair and gorgeous almond shaped brown eyes and says that everyone likes blonds and blue eyes, but I REALLY don't find that to be true. Ok, I'll stop the ramble, but I don't think protruding noses are all that attractive- lol. And as far as jawlines, there was a study in which women were more attracted to men w/ defined jawlines, it's kind of a rugged look- however they tend to actually marry and settle down with guys that have rounder features- good news for all you jawline-less men out there! :)

With all due respect to the resident ethologist, this varies culturally, e.g. when the Japanese encountered Europeans, they considered their protruding noses ridiculous. Indian and Persian art always suppressed the jawline in their idealized figures.

I would suspect that WASP features tend to be emphasized for socioeconomic reasons, especially in the US. And this is changing.

In the first place, that is not true in all cultures. I believe in USA and England it is because flat noses are some how associated with being black and therefore considered lower class in society. At the time in our history when we were rounding up black people for slavery purposes, flat wide noses were a rare thing in the white cultures. Sadly, prejudism is still alive and well in this country, in many very subtle and subconscious ways as well as some obvious and crude ways, in many places. If I am right about this, then the black people get to have the last laugh on us white folks and our pretty faces!! Have you ever noticed that black women generally have really nicely shaped hips/butts, and the black men also have that same feature with the added attraction of being "well built" in another nearby area as well?? Truth of the matter is, that our constantly seen pretty faces, will get saggy and develope wrinkles WAY before the blacks lose their unique form of beauty!!! They also get to choose who sees these qualities and who dont. We,on the other hand, must show our now "not so pretty" faces to the world!!! :)

Truth hurts !!!! I never knew NOT being self centered and prejudice could be so much FUN, until I answered this question. Thumbs Down on my response only adds to credibility to my theory.....THANKS FOR THE SUPPORT and KEEP THEM COMING LOL LOL !!!!

Symmetrical indicators of a genotype free of developmental insults. The media and especially society are you. Attractiveness varies by culture, but is never dichotomous.

You did know that, ultimately we are the descendants of those who were good at picking these features out and passing then on to progeny. Society and culture are engendered by humans, not the other way around.

Yes, Gnu, but all those cultures did not find the unattractiveness enough to prevent interbreeding.

Another indicator of cultural superficiality. I did say attractivenes varies by culture, but it is never dichotomous.

The same reason that bigger breasts are generally considered more atractive than smaller ones.
