Because when you write fiction, everything has to have meaning and symbolism to it.

Reality sometimes just happens for no reason at all.

It is 'stranger' because you expect it NOT to be as 'strange', but it OFTEN IS 'stranger'. A person expects 'real life' to be believable, or at least MORE believable than a fiction story. It's just that many times it is very hard to accept truth at its' face discovery.

I have had friends make statements to me that I said, 'no way' in response to. Later I realized, they were probably telling me the truth, I just couldn't accept it at the time.

It is because fiction is the result of whatever a writer's imagination can dream up. Real life just happens. Often, you will hear a writer say, "I couldn't write that stuff." -- meaning what actually happened (truth), is stranger than anything they could have ever imagined (fiction.)
