1. David was the second King of Israel, after Saul, the first one, didn't work out very well.

2. He was the greatest King of Israel. He defeated the Philistines, who had been an enemy of the Israelites since at least the time of Samson, and he conquered Jerusalem and made it his capital. He would also have built the Temple there, but God sent him word to leave that to his successor. And he wrote (some of) the Psalms.

Incidentally, he was also one of only three kings of united Israel. After the death of his successor and son, Solomon, the kingdom split, with the southern part, renamed Judah, remaining under the rule of David's descendants and the northern part, still called Israel, being ruled by a succession of short-lived dynasties.

3. It was prophesied that the Messiah would come from the line of David, and Christians and Messianic Jews believe that Jesus was the Messiah. The Gospels of Matthew (chapter 1) and Luke (3) give Jesus' descent from David. (They give very different lines of descent, but some Biblical scholars contend that one of these is the descent of Joseph and the other the descent of Mary.) Furthermore, Christians interpret Psalm 110, attributed to David himself, as referring to the Messiah.

David was chosen to be king of Israel by God Himself to replace his predecessor Saul . David led many successful military campaigns against the Philistines such as Goliath for example ; however , he was but " a ruddy youth " at this time and not king yet .
He is germane to Jewish history for a number of things such as setting the standard by which later Jewish kings were compared . Also , he and the king of Tyre helped to prepare for The Temple of God to be built by the accumulation of supplies destined for The Temple which would be built by his son Solomon .D avid also helped to unify the two Jewish kingdoms of Judah and of Israel .
David is in the genealogy of The Lord Jesus thus fulfilling ancient prophecy that from the line of kings The Lord Jesus would come and be that fulfillment of prophecy .
I hope I have helped you .
Happy & safe holidays ! :0)
I apologize for the brevity - I had to leave .
