It will turn on but it won't drive forward. You can hear the engine spinning, but it won't move forward.

I know its probably the tranny, but there might be a chance it's something else and you guys can help me.

It's either the tranny or the cv joint gave up the ghost.

If it`s stuck are you sure the wheels aren`t just spinning? Btw it`s been snowing for a long time here. and if you are stuck in snow then the wheels may spin because you are stuck on something. Try having someone pull you off whatever you are stuck on and let us know. Unfortunately we all don`t live in the same town and have no idea what you are stuck on so we can`t have a look. Get off the computer and help push your friend off the snowbank and see what happens

I think that it has something to do with positive traction. Go and put some tire chains on, or wait till morning when the ice freezes and then you have a better chance of getting it out, unless of course the tires have dug themselves far into the snow that there is no weight and/or traction to get out, then call a tow

Sounds like the tranny, but check your axle shafts could be broken.

I really need more details to make a diagnosis. However, if your friend was rocking the car trying to get it unstuck. I would guess the transmission was damaged.

really need more details, is it still snowing or has it melted? auto or manual?

two things to check
-is it in gear?(DUH)
-is the emergency brake on?

also, how long has it been sitting? and were there any problems before it was last parked?

sound like the transaxle is not moving the axles.....did you hit something when getting stuck...if so the inertia could have some impact on what happened...
