i have a 16 v trnsformer for my alarm system and i need to know which wire goes on which side of the transformer i have a red and white one and a black and green one which one goes on the left side and which one goes on the right side

Get out the owners installation manual or look it up on line.

Don't take electrical advise from people who are guessing.

Black and white wires should be the primary (120v) side. Black to power white to neutral.

Green and red wires should be the secondary (16V). It shouldn't matter which one goes to which connection.

For AC it does not make a difference and obviously a transformer provides AC.

I assume that the heavy wires have already been connected to the power lines and you are talking about the skinny connections for the 16V AC output.

It shoudn't matter which side you screw onto. To try it out you can take one wire and screw it on, now take the other and just touch the other for a moment to see what happens, I would say that it works just fine.
