Here are some other things you can do in a definition essay:

(1) Give the etymology of the word (probably not useful here--not enough to say).

(2) Show how the subject of the definition is NOT something similar. (Here, you could consider some people sometimes loosely called heroes and show how they don't really fit the definition.)

(3) Describe your concept of a hero in some detail. What are the necessary qualities a person must have to be a hero?

Then, when you get to giving an example, show how the person fits the definition. If you need yet another paragraph, you can give another example, preferably of someone who fits it in a different way.

Now, when you say you need at least four paragraphs, do you mean in all, or do you mean four body paragraphs (i.e. in addition to the introduction and conclusion)? Either way, you should have enough of a framework now to write enough.

As for the introduction, here's a tip if you need it: Mentally fill in the blanks in this sentence: A hero is a_______ with _______. (OR A hero is a _____ who _______.) Now work that sentence ("formal definition") into a thesis statement and put it at the end (yes, the END) of the introduction.
