Buy small things that are cheap
Maybe a big thing to share too depending on there genders
Try working at a Tim hortons or a dunkin donuts
Minumum wage is better then nothing
and this isnt alway permanent
in the new year possiblly look in newpaper adds for jobs wanted
put together a resume and give it out to a bunch of different places
8 year old boys normally like hot wheels (toy cars) or an action figure
girls normally like barbies or hair things like clips
9 year olds are pretty much the same
Boys- Same
Girls- SAME
None of those toys are overlly expensive
But i also think you should explain the situation to you're kids
When i was 8+9 i understood alot of things esspecially money situations!
hope that helped

Call your local family services that most likely has gifts for your children. Also try your church.
One other suggestion: the same thing happened to me long ago. Our electricity and phone were turned off, I cooked outside on a grill when there was almost a foot of snow on the ground. Luckily I had a wood burning furnise in our home.
That Christmas I wrapped up my old toys from when I was a kid. We chopped down a cedar tree on my property and we decorated it with homemade orniments, My children loved the toys.
To this day, we remember that as a good Christmas full of comfort because we had each other and we played games all day (there wasn't much else we could do with no money).
In the long run, I planted a small garden that spring to feed us, while I completed an associates degree- it took another few years of working 60 - 80 hours a week, but finally we were debt free.
Both my children now have college degrees debt free from that two year education.
Good luck and I wish perseverance for you.

Volunteer at a shelter or a children's hospital. When they have an opportunity to see that there are children worse off than them then they will appreciate what they have been blessed with-- a mother who cares. There are a ton of agencies looking to do things for children at this time of the year. I'm sure you'll find plenty for them, but the best lesson may be for them to learn that although life is not always fair it means more to have gratefulness in your heart than a ton of cheap toys from China under a tree.

Call your local information Call linkl line. They will have all of the organizations that help famillieswith all sorts of needs. Go to a local employment agency, or go to your local department of labor. they should be able to help you find a job. Everyone needs the Christmas help. Just explain to kids that they won't be able to have Christmas this year, and plan something fun to do with them, and once you get a job then you can treat them to something nice. Good Luck

Where do you live? Lots of churches and organizations have programs to help. Check with a community center or even local police department.
