A home-based company produces both hand-knitted scarves and sweaters. The scarves take 2 hours of labor to produce, and the sweaters take 14 hours. The labor available is limited to 40 hours per week, and the total production capacity is 5 items per week. Write a system of inequalities representing this situation, where x is the number of scarves and y is the number of sweaters. Then graph the system of inequalities.

x + y <= (less than or equal to) 5
2x + 14y <= 40

solving y <= 40/14, so you can only make 0, 1 or 2 sweaters (assuming no carryover from one week to the next. Theorectically, it's possible to make 2.5 sweaters one week and finish the 3d sweater the next)

solving x <= 5

Just graph the 2 lines and hatch below the lowest one at each point. One line slants from (0,5) to (5.0). Negative numbers are meaningless for this problem so just use the upper right quadrant of the graph.

The other line slants from (0, 2 6/7) to (20,0)
