My car is making a grinding sound that sounds like a pulley. When I turn the A/C on the noise is reduced about 90%. What is this? Thanks in advance.

Also, the book labor time would be helpful for whatever the fix is.

The a/c compressor clutch bearing is worn out. The reason the grinding sound goes away is that the clutch is magnetically "locked" when you turn on the a/c. When the a/c is turned off, the compressor clutch magnet releases and the pulley continues to turn, but the clutch does not, the pulley rides on a bearing within the clutch, thus, creating a grinding sound. The clutch on some compressors can be replaced. Being the car is right at 9 years old, it may be more cost effective to replace the whole thing, that is if you feel like the car is worth putting the money in it. A re-manufactured a/c compressor can run anywhere from $250 to $400 depending on the model plus the mechanic's labor rate for installation, evac and charging the a/c system. If you go that route, I strongly suggest that you replace the drier as well. It is a good rule of thumb to replace them as a pair. If all other components are fine, they will be OK. The figures the other guys below my answer are giving are kinda high, I don't charge nowhere near that much at my shop.

I would look at the automatic belt tensioner. Sounds like when you turn your A/C on its evening out the pressure, or balancing the pully depending on how close it is to the A/C compressor. Or look at the next accesory drive closest to the A/C pulley... Maybe powersteering or alternator. If either one has a problem and the bearings are breaking down, then when you turn the A/C on its helping pull the pulley. hope this helps.
