Actually, the NCAA does have playoff systems in every division except I-A . I agree with your argument, and think a playoff system has never been so needed as it is this year. Division I-AA (Championship Division) has a 16 team playoff system, as does Division II. Division III has a 32 team system, with each conference champion getting an automatic bid, and at-large bids in addition.
I believe the Division III system would better fit Division I-A, given the magnitude of the championship and the number of conferences contributing.
One of the greatest arguments against a playoff is the number of games played. My solution is simple: Limit each school to ten regular season games. If a conference has a championship game, this would make eleven.
Then you select 32 teams, play to 16, 8, 4 and 2. Now each team is playing 11 or 12 games, with the finalists playing 14 or a maximum of 15 games. Most teams now play a 12 game season, plus a conference championship and a bowl, which adds up to 14. So you're not playing anymore games, and you have a bona fide national champion.
What's stopping this? Simply, multi-million dollar bowl sponsorships and the media not wanting to let go of their influence on the national championship.

Division 2 college football has a playoff system so why not the top dog colleges. Right now the money is in bowl games and the t.v. contracts are there. I think in 2 or 3 years the contracts come up then maybe there is a chance. But the only way to find the best team is on the field Playoff !!!

The only way that it will work, is if you turn the Bowl games to a first round playoff games.
Because Universities are not going to give up the amount of money they receive for Bowl appearances.
Take the top 8 bowls and make a 16 team playoff system.
They can play all 8 games on 1 January.
Second round will be on 8 January.
Third round on 15 January.
Championship on 22 January.

There is too much money involved in the current bowl system. PLus the conferernce denying it is the BIg 10 because they know Ohio State would never make it to the Championship!

They do have a pretty good playoff system, it's called the Championship Subdivision. It could be a model for the upper division to follow.

i totally agree. every year, the only BCS national championship teams are always from the same conference. Hawaii, should have been able to compete in the BCS champsionship. or even like u said, VT, cause they beat boston college, and were already ranked 6, and ohio state didnt even play so they dont deserve to be in the BCS. In my opinion. it should have been VT vs Hawaii. or atleast LSU vs VT/Hawaii.

Its not tradition. If they put it in teams are gonna wine, "where was the system when we had a chance". there probably will be one but not till a while cause TV contract distributing seperate bowl games doesnt expire until 2010
