And that is why the South is now Republican country? It was called the "Southern Strategy".

HERE IS A FORMER CHAIRMAN OF THE GOP (((ADMITTING IT)))

GOP: 'We were wrong' to play racial politics

Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman apologized to one of the nation's largest black civil rights groups Thursday, saying Republicans had not done enough to court blacks in the past and had exploited racial strife to court white voters, particularly in the South.

"Some Republicans gave up on winning the African-American vote, looking the other way or trying to benefit politically from racial polarization," Mehlman said at the annual convention of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. "I am here today as the Republican chairman to tell you we were wrong."

Mehlman's apology to the NAACP at the group's convention in Milwaukee marked the first time a top Republican Party leader has denounced the so-called Southern Strategy employed by Richard Nixon and other Republicans to peel away white voters in what was then the heavily Democratic South. Beginning in the mid-1960s, Republicans encouraged disaffected Southern white voters to vote Republican by blaming pro-civil rights Democrats for racial unrest and other racial problems.

Yes, and that is THE ONE reason why African-Americans vote Democratic 9 to 1. In the 2008 election they will vote Democratic at a 95% rate due to the flawed GOP field and George W. Bush's presidency.

For a while the Democrats were very racist. There used to be a lot of KKK members in the Democratic party. Aside from the race issue, the Democratic party actually used to consider themselves conservative and to be for the people and to protect family values. Today most of the people in the Democratic party embrace liberalism, gay rights, socialism, high taxes, etc.

Racism must not be used by the Republicans as an issue. Respect all men and people must be treated equally.

Yep, and they continue that story tilll today, back in 2000 noone wanted Colin Powell for President so the GOP stopped him from running. Now you have extremist neoCons who would love to turn back our nations social clock to pre-Civil Rights times are restore segregation of everything. Its just show how the Republican Party is truly collapsing under the weight of its of own corruptions of the evangelical and Rove neo-Conservatives.

Thanks for the reminder. It's the stone truth.

I'm so tired of fellow Southerners saying "I didn't leave the Democratic Party, the Democratic Party left me."

Hells Bells !!! The party left them when they welcomed Negroes.

So, why are you bringing up a strategy that was used 20-30 years ago?

That is terrible that the Republicans would stoop so low as to hi-jack a Democratic strategy.

And before Lyndon Johnson, the Democratic party used racism to win over the south.
What's your point?
