I need reasons why John Brown was not a hero for an essay i'm writing. please help

Because he was nuts...

Okay, maybe that is too harsh.

Because he was mentally unstable and was willing to kill innocent people to bring attention to something that he felt strongly about. Brown felt that the only way to draw attention to his anti-slavery views was through arming slaves and violence. He killed pro-slavery sympathizers but he also killed a freed black that tried to stand in his way.

He used violence and terror to further his agenda... not a quality of a "hero".

Certainly some in the North viewed him as a hero. He was hanged for insurrection and murder, but the forces opposing him were the basis for the Southern forces during the Civil War.
