well, if you are a young person, and not a sadistic pedophile, thedollpalace.com is good. You get to create a personalized avatar (a lot like yahoo, except the whole body with TONS of accessories) and take that avatar to a chat room with others. You can also email and stuff on there. Pretty cool, used to do it at school as a sorta myspace thing. Got caught though, now it's blocked... :((
ADD: as mentioned above, gaiaonline was pretty cool too! But, I liked thedollpalace.com better...

depends the maturity of the 12 year old.
vmk.com (i think that is the site)
and gaiaonline.com is good if they like customization, games etc.
be warned though, the gaiaonline community ranges in age so the 12 year old can't be like... idk how to explain, act like a little kid.
