Considering Lincoln freed the slaves, how come there are zero black Republicans in congress?
The only black Republicans in government today weren't elected into office. They were appointed. Condi, Colin Power, etc.

Andy G has his facts wrong. He obviously isn't aware the the old Southern Democrats migrated to the Republican party. Anywho, why does race always play an issue? The people of the congress should be more diverse.

I think in many ways it's peer pressure from other Blacks. For example, in Maryland, Michael Steele ran for Senate a few years back as a Black Republican. There is a large Black population in Maryland. However many people referred to him as an "Uncle Tom" for running as a republican. As a whole, the Republicans voted for him, but Maryland is also a very Democrat state. You can blame them if you wish.

There are 43 black or African-American Members serving in thee 110th Congress:
42 in the House of Representatives, one in the Senate. There have been 121 black
Members of Congress: 116 elected to the House and five to the Senate. There have
been 94 Democrats: 92 in the House, two in the Senate; and 27 Republicans: 24 in
the House, three in the Senate.

Sorry didn't mean to bring up facts that negate your racist post

The Republicans represent the white and wealthy/upper middle-class conservatives and since they spout god and country, they somehow attract the white and poor vote as well, I guess their common ground being their dislike of blacks, gays, and their low opinion of women. I'll take being considered a bleeding heart liberal any day over being considered a racist, sexist, homophobic greedy "patriotic" christian.

Congressman JC Watts.
**I'm sure there will be another, or more, in the future.
What's your point? Not enough racism in the world today, so you want to encourage some more? Are you labeling all Republicans as racists?

Because if a black is running as a Republican, other blacks label him/her an "Uncle Tom" and refuse to vote for them.
By the way, Schlomosh - consider yourself reported. That has to be one of the most foul answers I have ever seen on this forum.

simple.
because republicans run on an implied racist platform.
these days, the pandering to racists generally is called 'state's rights' which really just means giving a state the right to fly the confederate flag, or to disenfranchise minorities.
the insane radical and racist republican base basically wants racists in power - the republicans are trying to fill that void for them.
if republicans had any real moral courage they would not want support from ignorant and racist people and would encourage everyone to be better than that.
instead republicans pander to racists and seek their support, money and votes.

I guess the mayor in Louisiana who during the hurricane Katrina was also appointed? He is a black American too. What about the black female senator who slapped that security guard. She was elected too. I pretty sure I can find more.

Jefferson and Hastings are not very good examples for Democrats. Voting should be based on integrity and qualifications, not skin color.
