Is this just *more* sexism (i.e. women need help / men need punishment)?

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/pressass/20071203/tuk-alternative-to-women-s-prisons-6323e80_1.html

A new approach to punishing women criminals could save millions of pounds a year, it has been claimed.
Findings from the New Economics Foundation (NEF) and the Prison Reform Trust said crimes could also be prevented by establishing a network of support and supervision centres.
As alternatives to jails they would help women offenders address the root causes of their offending, the interim findings suggested, by offering mental health treatment, help with drug and alcohol problems and advice on debt

Men don't need any help of course...

(the 'last line' of above was written tongue in cheek - sarcasm).

You've all heard of the times when blacks (or, to be a PC fruitjob 'people of colour' because the word 'black' must be faaaar too offensensive to use nowadays, right?) had to drink out of different water fountains to whites?
Well, it ain't gonna be long and we'll be seeing history repeating itself - one fountain for women and one for men. And all this under the guise of 'equality'.

"What are you moaning about? You have *a* fountain, don't you? Stop 'whining'..." will be the response.

The simple fact of the matter is that it is the person who commits the crime rather than a section of the population. The idea of reducing the penalty period for female offenders is tantamount to giving them tacit permission to break the law. The courts are already far too lenient when it comes to 'truth in sentencing' policies, especially with regards the comparison of actual time served for similar crimes by the two genders. Males invariably serve longer custodial terms than females. Where is the justice in that? If one sex is to be treated differently to the other then what is the point of us fighting for equality? Equality means both in the good times and the bad.

I could hardly believe my ears when I heard the news that all women's prisons are to be converted into men's prisons so that more men can be jailed. It seems that in future all female offenders will just get a slap on the wrist and be send on their way.

Talk about a two-tier society! Talk about equality under the law!

Hasn't that always been going on? I used to date the guys from The Taycheedah Correctional Institute when it was up and running, which had gone co-ed and Kettle Moraine; which hadn't gone co-ed; from what I heard there was always counseling for both sexes. Besides; being a woman myself, why should I get special treatment, who am I the Queen of Sheba? I guess some don't want to stop that endless persisting that men are the "no gooders" of the world; one day with more persistence that is going to grow as old as moldy bread. .

An alternative to ALL prisons might be a good idea. Some people need prison, others need something else. It's a tragedy that we haven't yet devised something that increases rehabilitation.
Fair play to some prisons though, it rehabilitated me as a youth and provided me with the basis for entering university. But you have to really want it.

Of course not. Men are all pigs who should be put behind bars, while us women are 100% innocent little angels with rose smelling farts. (sarcasm people) Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh, and monkey's eat blue banana's. I don't care if saves me a million dollars I'd rather have someone put behind bars for their crimes (unless they are truely mental, then a mental hospital, AND BOTH MEN AND WOMEN can be mental.) They should put it to a vote, and I vote NO! Women are just as guilty as men, and should have to put up with there sentances. (And we should be happy criminals of both gender are being taken off the streets)

i think these kinds of treatments are good AT FIRST, but afterwards, i think everyone can honestly say that if the person does something dangerous again, we would all feel safer with them locked away.

and no, thats not right that because "all women are kinder, less violent, and calmer" (obvious sarcasm) that they are not to be put in prisons. They should do the same thing with men and women.

If the women and the men were together, would you like that the women be sexual accused or even threatened by the men? That is the reason why the system provides two prisons.

So if a man does a crime he is evil if a woman does a crime it's because she has a drug or other problem and needs support, double standards or what.

"GENERALLY SPEAKING they are less violent criminals or the sheer numbers of violent crimes committed by women is much lower then men."
Right, but how about promoting this program to people based on their ACTIONS AND/OR BACKGROUND RATHER THAN THEIR GENDER??!? THERE ARE MORE VIOLENT WOMEN THAN MEN!!!!

I always enjoy it when we try to solve a problem at the root, instead of patching a bandaid on top of it. Perhaps the reason they are attempting a go with women is that GENERALLY SPEAKING they are less violent criminals or the sheer numbers of violent crimes committed by women is much lower then men.
