when your tires have little to no traction and that you're just sliding across the road.
and to the other person who says something about wind resistance, that's drafting.
it's very useful for cutting corners in a race but is very hard to control. going into a drift is usually done by locking the rear wheels by engaging the e-brake. The car is guided by the front wheels. The rear the wheels have no traction during a drift (the front wheels has only enough traction the guide the drift), producing 4 skid marks following the wheels. If your rear wheels have no traction, its a burn-out. if your front wheels have no traction, its understeer/oversteer.Add both you get a drift.
99% of drifts are done with rear-wheel drive cars.
Watch tokyo drift. Although half the stuff is just hollywood crap, you get the basic idea.

It means your car is not traveling in a straight line -- you are drifting from one side of the lane to the other or worse you are drifting into an on-coming lane and you are going to kill someone else and/or yourself. You need to get off the road and let someone else drive for a while...that's what that means.

"Drifting" is a race car term originally coined when a modified stock car "powers" into a turn without using his brakes as it could cause a wreck behind him. As he powers through the turn at full or somewhat less than full speed the car "drifts" through the curve or turns with wheels spinning and car seems to float through the turn but it is on full power and the driver is steering in the opposite direction of the turn to compensate for the power driving his rear wheels. Some street drivers employ this dangerous turn procedure jeopardizing their passengers and others around them. It is only for the experienced race driver to use. Hope that helps.

Drifting refers to a driving technique and to a motor sport involving the use of the technique. A car is said to be drifting when the rear slip angle is greater than the front slip angle, and the front wheels are pointing in the opposite direction to the turn (e.g. car is turning left, wheels are pointed right), and the driver is controlling these factors.

there are two definitions of drifting in driving?
1. When you lack focus while driving and you slowly drive off course.
2. Purposely braking your car at a turn so that the car swerves and slides around the bank in one fluid motion.

It means moving sideways (or your tires moving sideways), usually when you're cornering and especially in dirt-track racing (some corners are "four-wheel-drifters" where the fastest way to take the corner is to slide around part of it).
Can also refer to drifting across lanes.
