well it depends, I think, on whether or not it is a thingy or a thinguhmajig.. for instance if someone looked at you and there was something dangling from some part of you.. and they asked hey..whats that thinguhmajig? orrrrr.. they asked hey.. do you know your thingy is dangling? you see a thinguhmajig is only a thing that maybe a few people know what is.. and a thingy is something that lots of people know what is.. so what makes a thing a thing is whether or not people know what it is that is a thing ..you see the thing is that a thing is only a thing when it is some thing that people will think is a thing.. orrr not... orrr something like that..

Well I think first off it has to be tangible. You should be able to see it, touch it or something along those lines. And then you should put the word in context "What is that thing" is the way it's most used I believe.

the first way to know that it's a thing, I believe, is to know that it's not another thing...separation or distinctiveness.
in other words, you got a "thing" and you know that it's not a "thang" therefore, you've found the first clue of knowledge about it. Next, you can start to figure out other aspects of it.

Form and shape are necessary conditions for a "thing" of empirical existence; such things are called cognoscenti, or "objects of cognition."
Ideas, also, have "form and shape," called theme and subject, or subject and object.
