The limewire program itself isn't illegal. It's what you do with it that's illegal. If you download copyrighted material, it's illegal.

They can subpoena your ISP and find out your name from your IP address.

Limewire is perfectly legal. Downloading copyrighted material is very much illegal. They track your IP address.

Limewire is legal because there is a version you can pay for.
