You sound sensitive and smart. I think that you should ask for the one thing you truly want, something that well bring you happiness. As a parent I would want to give my child that, your thoughtfulness will be appreciated. You are the kind of young lady anyone would be proud to know and a gift would be not a problem for them to get you.

At 12, things tend to be fads like a dress, video game or music CD. Ask for a savings bond. Let's say it's $100 for your birthday and Christmas. At 18 that's $1,200 plus interest. Let's say you got a part time job at 16 and netted $3000 a year so now sometime at 18 years old you have $8,000.Open up a Roth IRA and at 18 you will probably be allowed to put all $8,000 in it. Ok here is the interesting part. If you keep that money in the Roth IRA and put no more money in it except to pay the fees (generally $25 a year) and it grows an average of 12% a year (the historical SP 500 average), you will have $4 million tax free 55 years later at age 67.

It might sound complicated, but time really is on your side to learn this stuff. You will soon learn compounding in school (this is why $8,000 could become $4 million in your lifetime).

A no name mp3 player or if you have one some expansion memory. A gift certificate for a clothing store you like is also a good Idea since clothes are a necessity and you can shop for yourself.
