.........against the goaltenders creed to go down to stop a shot?

This question came to mind as I was watching the Bobby Orr video link in Puckdats latest question. Some of the goalies just stood up as #4 was in close on a few of his plays. I wonder if during the 30's, 40's, and maybe the 50's if it was considered "unsporting-like" for a goalie to do that as a common way of making saves.

Considering that most users here are either my age or young enough to be my grandchildren, this sounds like a question for someone that recently ascended to the top of the Hockey Category. I won't say anything about his age........

LITY = Far be it for me to call anyone old, for that would be the pot calling the kettle black, but if anyone could answer the question from experience, I'd say that they also put the "e" in olde.

No, but prior to the 1917-18 season, it was against the rules for a goaltender to fall to the ice. It was a two minute penalty.

Tony Esposito was the first goaltender to 'fall' a lot. Prior to that it happened, but goalies didn't do it for a variety of reasons
- proximity of faces to sticks
- weight of pads made it difficult to get back into position
- being down meant loss of sightlines

Oh, and who is this 'old' guy you speak of? I've been looking for someone else my age ;)

Bill, I think it had more to do with technique than sportsmanship. Remember, the butterfly and hybrid styles of goaltending were not en vouge until the mid to late 1980s. I just really think the goalies of those days were just helpless against a once-in-a-generation force like Bobby Orr. Damn you bad knees!!!

Actually, I was reading this book about hockey which I rented from the library and it turns out there was a time period in which it was illegal for the goalies to go down. So, there was this goale (i dont remember his name)... would time it perfectly to make it look like a player tripped and he fell to make the save. Like this is pre-chelios time though..
