According to my late grandfather, the popular sports in the 20s were baseball, boxing and college football. The NFL was a tiny and obscure league. The big college football name teams were Army, Navy, and Notre Dame. With the advent of radio, games could be broadcast to fans. With the relatively prosperous economy, average people could afford to attend games. Still the attendance at baseball games was nothing like it is today because there were no night games until the mid-1930s and people had to work on most weekdays.

Back in the 1920's they were just games.. It was not a big market, and most if not all players had other jobs.
