I'm thinking its abstract much like love, not tangible, but of course it exists, but looking for more than just this reasoning to explain.

Anyone dare to try?

It is subjective. How much do you gain or lose depends upon who and where you are. It is like wave which rises and falls depending upon the circumstances. Respect is the other side of the coin where there is hatred. It can flip.

Everything exist, even love. Love is just much more comlicated. Love is a mixture of hormones and connections in the brain. As we grow to like someone we only like them because our brains have forged the connections (using neurons) that associates the person we like with positive memories (also just nerons) as well, the brain releases chemicals which makes us happy around that person because of those connections. Also, chemicals are released when we find that person to be attractive physically. This, along with other things I'm not going to mention (too long) creaes love. It is the same with respect, it is merely conections in the brain that associate a certain person with memories of that person doing something that would be classified as worthy of respect (helping a lady cross the street, being in a position of authority), therefor you respect that person. Hmmm, sorry about this being so long. But everything is physical (in terms of matter) when you get right down to it. It just gets more complicated.

Abstract in the sense that it is fleeting and subjective.

Maybe a little of both. It's intangible, yes, but its effect can be seen or felt and will be definite when experienced. i.e., you'll know it when you see it....
