It's based on characters from the book, but with a different spin on it.
I am thrilled that something so interesting like this is on t.v. I was just as thrilled when Gregory Maguire wrote "Wicked" which was also based on the life of the Wicked Witch of the West.
I love spins on old classics

A science fiction version of "The Wizard of Oz" in which Dorothy gets sucked into an alternate dimension called the "Outer Zone" where the law enforcement officers are called the Tin Men. On her search for the way home, she gets help from three familiar characters. Among them is a cowardly, wolverine-like animal without a backbone, a wicked sorceress named Azkadellia and a wizard known as the Mystic Man.

Arichter399's nailed it...the "Tin Man" miniseries is based on the original L. Frank Baum book which was also the source material for "The Wizard of Oz" ("The Wonderful Wizard of Oz"),though updated to 21st century time rather the 1910s of the original novel.

Tin Man is the Sci Fi Channel's Original Mini-Series
that is based on Wizard of Oz, from what I've heard anyway

it will have it's differences though....

(because it's their mini-series, it comes on tonight at 9, monday at 9, and tuesday at 9.
2 hour long episodes each.... tonight's repeat on monday at 7 and monday's 9pm ep repeats on tuesday at 7)

It is based on the original book but very different from the movie. It is far more interesting in my opinion. I can't wait for the final episode to air tonight.

No way. It is based on L. Frank Baum's book of the wonderful wizard of oz. Baum made wrote this book to be a a modern (for the yr it was written) children's book. This mini series is a modern twist of his book.

Not really, it's more inspired by it than based on it.
