93 Ford Festiva, old and beat up automatic 2 door. It is my daughters car. It will not start. The oil was clean and good. The radiator hose was detached from the top of the radiatior. Radiator was bone dry, and the overflow has greasy gunk in the bottom but no coolant. I think my daughter overheated her car and blew her engine, but the mechanic says he thinks it is a broken transmission belt. Given the circumstances, does that make sense? And would a broken transmission belt prevent the car from starting?

Karen P - I am with you; this is funny (but tragic)! I am pretty sure it is either a blown engine or a timing belt.

Any mechanic that says anything about a 'transmission belt' knows less about cars than 95 percent of the population.
Will the motor even turn over when you try to start it? If not, its likely that the engine was overheated and in this case its probably in your best interest to get another cheap car for her to drive. Greasy gunk in the coolant reservoir could point to a blown head gasket. If this is ALL that is wrong with it, it can be fixed but NOT by a the 'transmission belt' mechanic. In order to do a thorough head gasket replacement, not only does the gasket need to be changed but also the oil and coolant. It might be in your best interest to open the bottom of the radiator and flush the system out a few times to get all the oil residue out, if possible.

transmission belt? The only belt that would prevent you from starting that car would be the timing belt. If she ran the car out of water. do a compression check to see if you have any problems there. Check the oil to see if it has turned the color of brown. Like chocolate milk. That would indicate a blown head gasket or cracked head or cracked block. Ask your daughter if she heard any kind of noise from the engine before this problem accord.

itll prolly start but the trnsmission controls the gears so what will happen is that you'll prolly never get out of your driveway unless its slanted and the car rolls down and if it does itll only go like 1mph. the transmission also doesn't have a "belt". the only belt thats common between all make and models is the engine belt that runs the whole engine. so no your car will not run right even if it does turn on.

Look underneath the vehicle for signs of a coolant leak. If you see coolant, then your water pump may be at fault. Usually you will not hear the loud squeaky sound until the bearing in the water pump has completely given out; at which point you must IMMEDIATELY replace your water pump. More than likely it is a loose or worn belt. Tighten or replace as necessary.

Well, your tranmission fluid is circulated through the radiator, but have you checked the tranmission fluid level..also you need to add coolant to radiator, spin car over and see if compression gases come back through the radiator..if so then blown head gasket..but never heard of tranmission belt..you might have miss heard him...maybe timing belt...now that would not let car crank..and also if the water pump was leaking coolant and it saturated the belt..or broke to old age..then that i understand..when you spin the car over...does it have a real high pitch sound..let me know

Head gasket or a cracked block, that gunk you found was oil and antifreeze mix...cause of this...Belt from a tranny would have no reason for the car starting...find a new mechanic...
For him to tell you something like that, either hes not smart...or he has done recently done work to the car that may have caused this and he tring to cover himself...Good luck

It's possible that the engine is blown. The mechanic is either lying to you or doesn't know any better. A transmission 'belt' is actually a 'band' that ingages a gear and doesn't have any connection to the engine itself.

Transmission belt??? New one on me. And no, nothing to do with the tyranny, except for the neutral safety switch will stop a car from starting.
