Map reading is a lost art.
The use of maps is to point out the geographical ares that are of interest.
This could be for studies or pleasure. To locate point "A" on a map then to compair it from your location is an interesting task.Thenn if you "select" a route to get to this point will make a trip easier for you and more enjoyable that taking a wrong turn.
The hardest part of map reading is re-FOLDING the map.

Because it's fun. For me at least. When I was young I didn't have toys to play with becaue my parents couldn't afford them, but I did have a road atlas and perhaps some local maps in the phone book. I enjoyed memorizing all the towns and highways. To this date I still feel relaxed whenever I look at a map and reading about geographical issues, even though what I'm doing now is irrelevant (I'm a computer science student).
