Open-eyed sleeping is called lagophthalmos. Some birds and mammals do this as a sort of defense mechanism for survival. Usually in lagophthalmos only one eye remains open during sleep. Like others have answered, it isn't a necessarily a good thing to do (dry out your eyes, risk having a foreign object fall into your eye...). But, you can learn to relax with your eyes open in what is called awareness meditation. There are a lot of books and internet sites on it. It is very interesting and I think I'd stick with that rather than trying to sleep with your eyes open!

aah you'll be fine! Jeez these ppl r over reacting .. drying your eyes come on! you need to keep your eye open for @ least a whole day for that

I find this question a little awquard and do not feel comfortable sharing my knowledge on the subject, not that I know anyway. But still. Why dont you ask someone who does, and maybe you guys can have a wide-eyed sleepover =]

stay awake for a long time...keep depraving yourself....your body will learn how to enter REM while you are 'awake' (eyes open)
having said that...it is a dangerous game to play...depraving sleep can make you insane...literally...no BS...be careful
