If you've never seen the guy in action, here's a small taste.
What do you think?

It's too bad Bobby played in an era where there is limited video of his play. There were so many more moments worth watching.
No Dirt - that is probably the best point so fa.
Mike and Lubers: those posts do put some perspective on this.
Gretz was an offensive machine, best playmaker ever.
Mario was a goal scoring juggernaut rivaled only by Rocket
Orr was simply a complete hockey player. He hit, fought, scored and played some D. And still the finest skater I ever saw.
Green: it was 6 and yes he was embarassed at how he humbled an entire team.
I'm leaving this question up for a while so more people can see the link (and the two Mike and Lubers added).

Yes, he was a great player. However "The Greatest" is always a matter of opinion. And yes I did grow up watching Bobby Orr play. He certainly was magnificent.
Frankly LITY, I'm a little disappointed in your answer. Most of your stuff I have read has been intelligent and insightful. I don't think anyone is trying to compare Niklas Lidstrom to Orr, Lidstrom is more a pure defenseman, Orr was an offensive defenseman.
To just dismiss Lidstrom though brings to mind all those people who think the only great players are dead players. No one playing today could possibly be as good as the old timers.
I would be willing to bet a lot of money that at least 50% of our sports 'Heros" of yesteryear couldn't even make the team today. Orr may not be one of those, I think he could play in any era. Of course there is no way to prove it, but I think I could win a lot of money if it could be done.

I click the link when available for just about every question I answer. This is one of the minority that I sat through the entire thing for and it was worth every second. I agree with Mike that there is one better, however my opinion on whom it is differs. I see many similarities and the only difference I really see is that my choice was lucky enough to stay healthy.

I was impressed with how far out he could score on the backhand. In the modern era, I've only once seen anyone score from anywhere near that far on a backhand. Eric Lindross with, like, seven seconds left in a playoff game against the Rangers ten or so years ago. And all that scoring from his knees (or flat on his face!) How the hell did he do that?!?!? Were goalies just not as good back then?
Oh, and muskrat--he embarassed the goalie as well on that play. 3F +2D +1G=6

I'm impressed big time! I came around to hockey back in the mid-1980s, and Paul Coffey was the closet defenseman to Bobby Orr. How amazing! I wish I had been born twenty years earlier than I was just to see Orr play. Thanks Puck for the video. Before this, the only Orr footage I have seen was the Blues/Bruins "flying" goal back in 1970 (Stanley Cup finals, I believe).
At least I did get to see three of the five greatest players play in their respective primes (Gretzky, Lemieux, and Roy).

Wow, that was a nice video. I sent it to a few of my family & friends....with "Crosby who?" in the subject line. Neither Gretzky or Lemieux couldn't match Orr's toughness.
What an appropriate song to go with it too, eh? "Baby you're the best...."

I guess I'll be giving away my age if I say that I'm still trying to forget how well he played against the Flyers. But he was great.
I miss the old days when there weren't names on the back of jerseys, face-hugger masks, and "Moose" Dupont's goal celebrations. (Spotted him there briefly)
Thanks for the link.

Reminded myself of when I was young and could do those things....sigh
One of the highlights of that video was seeing the old California Seals uniforms.
Truly the greatest player the game has ever seen, and how anybody can watch that and think Nicklas Lidstrom is even 20% of the defenceman that Robert Gordon Orr was has no real appreciation of the game of hockey.
