I tried cleaning out all the dust, and leaving the gas control knob off for several minutes, but the pilot flame goes out every time I release the pilot button. ----I've also tried holding the button down for several minutes before releasing it.
It went out by itself, and refuses to relight.

big j,

This is one of those times that one does NOT take advice from strangers on the web.

Actually, most of the time is probably one of those times. lol

I suggest getting a professional to look at it and pay the price.

Your continued existence is no doubt worth the price; I've read some of your stuff!

A competent, registered service engineer might consider replacing the thermocouple that sits in the pilot flame, after turning off the gas supply and electricity supply, with a new one he bought from, say, B&Q or a host of other plumbing outlets. But of course I merely speculate .... I am not a gas engineer, just a householder on a budget.

Perhaps there is a clog in the gas line. If this is Philgas or similiar product call your dealer and have the problem rectified. It appears you are not getting a steady stream of fuel to the pilot light. If this is from a natural gas utility have the repairman fix it. You don't want to fool around with an explosive mixture.

The pilot assembly is probably dirty and needs cleaned. While you are at it, you should replace the thermocouple. For more info including troubleshooting , check out the furnace page at my source.

Ensure the flame is covering the t-couple also ensure the little nut is tight at the gas valve. (nut on thermocouple.) If all is good, replace the thermocouple. Shouldn't cost more than $5

The little rod-thingy has probably gone bad. It's the thing that the pilot flame has to keep hot so that it will continue to burn.
