Voyager 1 is the furthest spacecraft that has ever traveled from Earth.

Carl Sagan had an idea to turn the camera around and take one last picture of the earth from the furthest point in space that a picture has ever been taken. You can see this image in the U-Tube video "We are here: The Pale Blue Dot." (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2pfwY2TNehw)

The image was a mosaic of shots taken to create one larger image. It was resisted for a while because scientists feared it might burn out the Voyager Camera looking back at the sun, but the shot worked and it was taken many times to compose one complete image.

It is probably not the furthest away picture ever taken of the earth-moon system, but to me it is the most intriguing one, because it puts the earth in perspective.
The image of the earth is taken from behind Saturn and is seen between Saturn's outer ring systems.
Take a look at the Cassini Imaging site at ciclops.org. Go to the imaging diary and scroll down until you see the link labelled "13Sep - Oct'06.
Click on it and look for the image labelled "The pale blue Orb. it is image # PIA8324.
There are three versions of it. It shows the erth-moon system as a tiny dot in the original.
Two blown up versions are also shown with the earth-moon system enlarged.
Give it a try and take a look at some of the other fantastic images and all the new discoveries made by this team in the system of Saturn. lots of new stuff we never knew about. They just recently discovered the 60th!! moon of Saturn.
