Yes, I am stupid. I was in a rush and the oil light came on. I immediately pulled over and put about 1litre or just under 1/4 gallon of water in my oil. I have driven about 200km since and have realised it was the oil lamp, not the water lamp that came on. Please help!

Thanks for responses. Here is now my dilemma: Clearly I know very little about draining / changing oil. So do I get a friend over to help out and drain oil / change filter etc and play on as though nothing happend (due for next 30,000km service in about 5,000km) Or, risk the warranty and drive it about 10 miles to my dealer and get them to look at it / do it.
It's a VW GTI (turbo). Thanks again, keep the answers coming!!

Drain the oil and change the filter. If you can find or afford one put on an oil filter that will help trap any water. Replace the oil with the normal recommended engine oil then change again soon ( within the next 100 miles). Make sure that when you change the oil the second time the engine is good and warm. There are products available in the US that are specifically to remove trace amounts of water from the oil. Do not start your engine again before you change the oil. You may not have damaged your engine yet, but if it is under warranty, check the terms of your document to see if you have to tell the dealer about this. If not, don't tell. You aren't stupid unless you repeat the mistake next time.

Drain out all of your oil immediately! Place new oil in car along with a recommended cleaner and a new oil filter run car for about 15 min. (mystery oil is my preference) to displace that water. Then change the oil and filter again. You should be OK. If there wasn`t any damage done.

No, don't put water in with oil, it does nothing. Just go to your Volkswagen dealership, and the service guy can help you out or just read the driver's manual that came with your car.
You're right, the light probably meant change your oil, don't add water, besides your car is only 1 year old, it wont do much harm. On most cars, you can at least go 1000 miles above if you didn't already change your oil if you needed to.
Hope this helped.
