are coworkers competitive w/ one another when the one they are competing against is in the same chain of command as the they are? even to the point of deceit?

Coworkers are competetive sometimes with one another, there is no doubt about that, however being deceitful is only done by a few, you can't lump everybody in with that one, most bosses know the ones that are that way.

It really depends on what the company is, and what type of work they are achieving to compete for.
