Well define good pay... in comparison to the private market, no. It is common knowledge that government employees make less than their privatized counterparts.

But, in comparison to other nations, yes they do good especially when the fact they get full benefits is calculating in the equation.

It depends on which government employees you are talking about. Lifetime bureaucrats, as was stated, enjoy great base salaries, regular pay increases, and terrific benefits. Most elected officials, however, could be making much more in the private sector. Take Alabama for instance. Candidates spend millions of dollars to get a job that pays less thatn $100,000 per year. The same is true of Congressmen and Senators. For members of Congress, especially, the pay is nowhere close to what they could be making elsewhere. Add to that the extra cost of keeping up two residences (one in DC and one in their district) plus the cost of traveling back and forth (in DC during the week and at home on the weekend) and they really don't have a great deal. Of course, they do get certain tax breaks and other benefits, but again the private sector pays more. I mean, the President makes $400,000 per year. How much did President Bush make annually before his first term began.

Most government employees at the federal, state and local levels are paid very well and enjoy excellent benefits, thanks to the over-burdened American taxpayers. Most also get automatic pay increases, lots of paid vacation days, and have relatively light responsibilities. Want proof? Visit your local City Hall, court house, small claims court, or other municipal office. Careful observation will see employees who are not over-stressed; you'll see a lot of 'flirting' and socializing in the office between co-workers; and you'll usually see a complete disregard for the poor taxpayer who has to visit any of these offices for whatever reason. Most government employees - at the federal, state or local levels - don't seem to grasp the concept that they are public servants. In fact, they often treat the 'public' shabbily as they go on about their merry, casual work day.
I see it all the time. It's almost as bad as that TV show, "The Office" where there's little productivity and even less of a work ethic! -RKO- 12/02/07

It depends on your position, I'm only 25, I work for the federal government and I make good money...

There is no such thing as a "government worker", there are government employees, but that is a contradiction of terms.

Hardly. Senior officials get paid well, but the office workers and other mainstream employees don't make much at all.
