What is the typical amount of yarn I will need to buy to knit or crochet a typical sized blanket? And what size needles?

I like my blankets big and warm. And I don't believe they should have holes lol.
An average size blanket for me is 25 - 3.5 oz. skeins of worsted weight yarn. It also depends on the stitches I use. I crochet on the tight side so I always use a J size crochet hook and that works really well for me. If I'm doing afghan stitch, I use an I size hook.

When I work with a pattern, I buy the suggested amount of yarn plus one extra.

I do both and prefer crochet. I've been knitting since I was a child and only learned to crochet about 2 years ago. I find knitting takes too long...with crochet, I see the results quicker. But when I'm working with a novelty yarn I almost always knit...I can find my stitches easier.

Well, figuring that the average adult size large sweater uses about 1200 to 1500 yards of yarn and afghans are usually somewhat larger than this, figure on about 2000 yards (don't buy by the ball or skein, buy by yardage per ball, since even balls of the same weight avoirdupois have different yardages) for knitting, and probably another 500 to 700 yards for crochet, since crochet takes 1/3 more yarn than knitting. You'll want worsted or jumper weight yarn (depending on your country of origin, since the terms are different in different parts of the world) and hooks or needles in the 5 to 6 mm range or sized 7 to 9 US.

I use patterns which tell you this kind of information. It depends on the weight or thickness of yarn which size needles you use and how much you will need. If you are really good at math, you could knit or crotch a swatch and measure the amount of yarn you used, then figure the area of the entire garment and work it out that way.

Using heavy yarn and large needles means it works up faster, but it costs the most, as it will make the thickest garment and thick yarn is usually the most costly.

I crocheted a blanket that was about Queen size, it took about 15 skeins. But just a throw for a couch should only be about 5. I always use a 5.5 needle...but when you crochet needle sized depends on the yarn.

If you just started knitting or crocheting you might want to start with a scarf. They are easy and can take one to two balls, depending on the size. I am still stuck on the scarf and small thing faze, but all patterns tell you how many ounces to get. usually ten to eight if I remember correctly.

Good luck, and happy stitching.
