"Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things. Among them are H. L. Hunt (you possibly know his background), a few other Texas oil millionaires, and an occasional politician or business man from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid."
- Dwight D. Eisenhower, Letter to Edgar Eisenhower, Nov 1954

Yes, he was right However, he didn't realize that most weren't listening to his warnings! All of these things have been tested by some of the politicians that came after him. Our farm programs go mostly to the large corporate farms, labor law are almost non existent, S.S. & medicare are being abused, the money has been spent on other priorities, it is supposed to be backed by treasury notes, but they are useless, we have no treasure left! Wise man, unfortunatly we still haven't seem to grasp the full meaning of what he was trying to tell us! Some leaders in the Presidential campaign are taking money from the very people that have contributed to our loss of all of the things he warned us about!

The Texas oil millionaires in charge today found a way around it. Instead of admitting they are in favor of getting rid of social security, they are doing it secretly by "starving the beast". They are intentionally running up the national debt so that eventually we will not be able to afford social security anymore. The Republican party has been doing this since Reagan was elected in 1980.

To a certain degree, I do agree with this quote, but he left some things out. He did on another occasion, however, warn against the Military/Industrial Complex. *sm*

In my opinion, the United States as we know it is in grave danger from our own government policies and the policies that are being suggested.
