Parliamentary democracy. The head of the government is the Austrian Chancellor. The head of state is an elected President with only ceremonial duties. There is a lower and upper house of the Austrian parliament. For most of the history of the Second Austrian Republic which came into being in 1995 the government has been a coalition of two or more political parties. The leading political parties are the Social Democrats and the Peoples Party. Others are the Alliance for Austria's Future, the Freedom Party and the Green Party.

Austria became a federal, parliamentarian, democratic republic through the Federal Constitution of 1920. It was reintroduced in 1945 to the nine states of the Federal Republic.
The head of state is the Federal President, who is directly elected by popular vote. The chairman of the Federal Government is the Federal Chancellor, who is appointed by the president. The government can be removed from office by either a presidential decree or by vote of no confidence in the lower chamber of parliament, the Nationalrat.
