Pens and pencils, plastic sunglasses, bright bead necklaces, coloring books, and deflated balls if you have the room in your luggage for those. Anything they can use for entertainment that is easy to carry. Also take a couple bottles of aspirin along, sometimes the families you stay with would appreciate extra basic medication they may have a hard time getting. Decorated bandaids are a nice idea too.

Have you seen the little wooden cup and ball games? They are a hoot and take a little practice to master well.

There is a handle with a "cup" on the end. Through a little hole for the string is attached a ball. The object of the game is to sling the ball into the cup. It is harder than it looks.

Girls of all ages love jump ropes! Even old girls like myself!

Hope this helps! Nana

South Africa is the 24th largest economy (out of 200+) in the world, if you want to "help children", why don't you do so in a poor country?

But where in Africa are you going to?......as the other contributor said here......it would be better for you to check the need for that country.....while South Africa has many poor people (and I'm a South African) I would prefer that you donate to more needy communities in other countries of Africa......

Things they can use in school, some clothing, toys, medicine, soap, toothpaste, books and remember to wrap some of it - kids love presents and rather get toys that don't need batteries - lol i bet buying is almost so much fun as giving it

Our kindy has made up some treasure boxes for underprivilaged children o/seas. In the boxes we put teddybears, tooth brush/paste, small doll, t shirts, cars, pencils & paper, soap & facewasher/flannel, shampoo/conditioner, etc. Toys & basic living essentials that we all take for granted will all be used & treasured emmensely.
Good on you for thinking of others less fortunate.

If you are from the USA bring Bratz dolls for the girls and Transformer toys for the boys, these toys are extremely expensive in SA eg. I paid 11$( less than R35 per doll) for 2 Bratz dolls in the US in SA one doll = from R 190 to R360. The same with the Transformer toys. Older kids like designer wear like NIKe, Reebok etc. These branded clothes are also extremely expensive in SA. Just do not bring PS 2 or 3 games, they are not compatible with SA bought PS.
