Has this ever happened to you?

My daughters remote control to her tv started to smoke when she was using it this morning. She said she could hardly hold it in her hand it was so bad. She finally managed to throw it outside. Scary to say the least. Does anyone know what would cause this? The batteries were almost new.

Possible battery leakage reulting in chemical reaction with the plastic of the remote causing the heat and smoke.

was she changing the channel really really fast?
