Because of the song jingle bells and Santa

Bells represent Joy and Sorrow. They are a symbol of creativity and harmony; the creating Word, and the music of the spheres. [Gen 1; John 1:1-4] High in the towers, suspended between heaven and earth, bells and especially their clappers, represent communication and suspension between heaven and earth, or humans and God. Even today, on Christmas Eve, these bells may be heard ringing at midnight. In other European towns, the ringing of bells from churches that were swallowed up by earthquakes during worship services may be heard by putting one's ear to the ground on Christmas Eve.

Ambeaner said it all.

Bells from churches when being transsported over oceans and that have fallen in the sea, can still be heard ringing by divine intervention.

Bells are blessed by a priest and then they go above the church or even the sacred small bells in church are blessed.
Bells also drive off evil spirits, because it is a sound of joy to God. Basically bells are a calling to come praise, pay attention to, and bells were rung in Europe also at 6 a.m., 12 pm. and 6 p.m. to summon churchgoers to Holy Mass. If some couldn't make it this was their only way of telling time.
