There was no daughter, though, just a wife.
The memory loss condition was a result of a blow to the head during the assault on his wife. He didn't kill his wife, someone else did, and the tattoos are clues to help him find the killer.

I don't know which movie you are thinking of, but you reminded me of a role Ben Affleck had where he left clues behind to get his memory back.The movie was called paycheck. It was a bit less grim than the story you are trying to recall.
