being engaged just means how much of babies head in in your pelvis ready to be born.

the labor should start soon but it vary's for everyone. Once my water broke that set me into early labor. but early labor can be hours before active labor begins. so just relax and to induce labor take a walk.

I'd answer but I don't know what 5/5 engaged is. My baby's head is engaged but my doctor didn't give any numbers like that..

Like I'm 2cm 60% effaced and -1 station but she never said anything about something out of 5, sorry! But if you're baby's head is engaged, you probably have less than 4 weeks, I'd say.

"Your caregiver will also try and determine how they are now lying. This may be in an 'anterior' position (with the baby's back being towards the front of your belly) or 'posterior' (towards your back), or 'lateral' (towards your side). You can see images of how unborn babies look when they lie in these positions in class 5. Once your baby's head engages they are less likely to move their back from one side of your belly to another (although some very active babies still manage to do this). However, they can still move from being in an 'anterior' position to a 'posterior' and visa versa quite readily before labour."

Your baby is posterior - please read this info on labour with a baby in posterior position -http://www.birth.com.au/class.asp?class=...
Engagement or 'station'.Engagement is when the presenting part of the baby moves down into the woman's pelvis in readiness for labour, usually about 1 to 4 weeks before the birth. In most cases it is the baby's head that engages, but when a baby is in a breech position their bottom can also engage.

The engagement or 'station' is usually measured in '5ths' and is based on the fact that the width of an adult hand is about the size of a term baby's head. When recording engagement on your pregnancy records, usually the amount of the baby's head that is felt by the caregiver's hand is measured and written down, providing a guide as to how much of the baby's head is engaged in the pelvis. As a guide:

If 5 finger widths of your baby's head is felt, it is written as 5/5 palpable or 'unengaged'.
If 4 finger widths of your baby's head is felt, it is written as '4/5' palpable or 1/5 engaged.
If 3 finger widths of your baby's head is felt, it is written as '3/5' palpable or 2/5 engaged.
If 2 finger widths of your baby's head is felt, it is written as '2/5' palpable or 3/5 engaged.
If 1 finger width of your baby's head is felt, it is written as '1/5' palpable or 4/5 engaged.
If your baby's head cannot be felt it is written as 'fully engaged' or 'not palpable'.

Most babies become 2 to 3 fifths engaged (or 2 to 3 fifths palpable) before labour commences, only becoming fully engaged during labour. If your baby is very active they may move 'in and out' of different levels of engagement during the last few weeks of the pregnancy, especially if this is not your first baby.

Also i am almost 40 weeks pregnant and at 37 weeks my baby was only 1/5 engaged then the next week he was 4/5 engaged!! yippee!! i layed on the lounge pretty much all week so i would say bubh will move down further when ready, but if your keen walking is supposed to be good, as is swaying your hips from side to side when your standing up.

Hope this helps, visit this australian site i highly recommend it!! goodluck!!

so bacically your ready!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Unfortunately, how early your baby engages does not always indicate how early you will deliver. My first was partially engaged by 32 weeks and fully engaged a few weeks later, and my second was fully engaged by 32 weeks. I did not go into labor within even four to five weeks with either of them.

My son was like that at 31 weeks. I delivered like 2-3 days short of my due date.

Placement of the baby on means that baby is ready to be born when labor does start. It doesnt mean its starting.

Hello,
Yes everyone is different.

First baby, dilated with water broke and baby born in 3 hours. Had to be bed ridden with this one and because of my pain level not even the er nurses believed me when I wold them I was having this baby, NOW.
Second baby was stubborn and it was like 22 hours.
Third baby was five hours if I remember correctly (went into labor, water broke at work).

Everyone and every baby is different.

I don't know what 5/5 engaged mean....but my first child came after 12 hours of labor. My second child came one hour after labor started.
Everyone is different, it's so hard to predict....good luck, you should be going in soon!!!

I would love to help but my doctor never used the word engaged. Maybe I didnt listen to him during labor but I really never heard that word. What does it mean?

He used efaced. ( however i cant spell it) that was how much the baby had turned and moved to the birth canal.

I reply first, and if the answering makes me suppose or makes my day, then I'll superstar. I recognise...it is choosy of me, sorry. o.o But this manner I become pointing my lovers and contacts to the *well stuff* you recognize? ^__^ Or no less than I attempt to. But have a celebrity besides only for being sufferer and information. ^_^
