They were actors paid to play the part. They answered an add in their school newsletter. They were some of very few that wanted the job. The add read something about getting dirty and being outdoors.

Those were just actors. To advertise the movie, the producers set up fake websites and stories about the events to make it look like it was real, so a lot of people really believed it when they saw it. I actually met one of the actors when he was doing an appearance at a movie theater.

They were all actors. The movie was not very good. I do think it was very cleaver to make a movie that appeared, or was filmed, with a camcorder. Too bad the story was so bad.
