Thats great if you can afford to pay for the delivery out of pocket.... but after three kids, I've seen the amount of times you are at the doctor are ridiculous. I can't even fathom having to pay all those bills out of pocket. Never mind the well baby visits, but the sick ones, the visits to various specialists (two of my kids needed ear tubes, one had her tonsils removed, one of my kids has asthma, etc.)

I highly recommend getting insurance.

Have you heard about COBRA - it allows you to keep insurance from a previous job until you have something to replace it. Once the person leaves the old job they should be contacted by HR and told how much it will cost. PROACTIVE people go to HR in advance and find out. This will cost you far less than paying for the birth on your own, but it will not be cheap.

And when the new insurance kicks in they can't say the pregnancy was a ""preexisting condition"' because the old group policy continued.

If you need help email---

What would you do about a preemie- REMEMBER 1 day in the NICU is about $5,000- the average 30 day stay is $150,000. You can not afford that. BORROW the money to pay COBRA if you have to!

Why not just get an individual policy & keep it until your new insurance kicks in?
50 grand a year won't help you out if there are any complications & say you have to have a c-section or stay in the hospital for a week or more, or if there is any problems with the baby. Those costs will keep adding up & could end up in the hundreds of thousands. You just never know.

I don't have insurance I just set up a payment plan at the hospital. It wasn't a big deal. You should EASILY be able to do it because I don't make anywhere close to that and I found the payments very easy to make.

TIP- If your company offers you medical insurance or if you have the extra cash to pay for medical insurance through a company- for your child I would do it. Since there will be check-ups and all kids get sick at some point and so on.

You can't be refused at the emergency room, they have to treat you. However, the costs are mindbogelling. If you don't have insurance, I'd search the web for a month premium you can afford that will cover your imediate situation. God forbid the baby gets sick, you could easily rack up 10k in medical expenses where spending $300 per month could cover 80-90% of the overall costs.
Good luck

You don't want to do that! Too expensive and too much of a chance for the doctors to take it either. See if you can get insurance through some online company I know United Healthcare is reasonable.

I had this situation myself. When I first got pregnant, the dr. had me pay each office visit and gave me an est. of what his delivery fee would be. I paid it off during the nine months of my pregnancy. After I delivered the baby, the hospital sent me their bill, and eventually (about a year) I paid that off.
Just talk with your physician to see how he can help you... Good Luck!!!

no
the cost of such a stay would probably pay for most of a year of insurance for a normal healthy non pregnant person.

You say you could afford payments for a normal birth but who says it's gonna stay normal.

Some places absolutly require insurance for planned procedures

Well that depends on how you manage your money. Of course in theory. sure you could. To be safe, I would just buy insurance or apply for public assistance. Here are some stat's of pregnancy cost in the U.S.

2006
Nevada
$9,875.84

2006
Texas
$12,128.17

2006
Pennsylvania
$23,740.00

I added some info here I found on the web.. There are plenty of site where this info is available.

Actually yes I think you can, if that is what you choose to do, but personally I think it would be better for you to get insurance just you know for the baby and stuff. (Plus it wont cost you as much.) Good luck!
