Try a little bit of silicone grease. If you don't have any, a bit of vaseline will work too.

If its a new cube, don't lube it just yet. Lubing it right now will give you a fix for maybe a day max before it starts being a problem again.
Instead, just work through the stiffness. If you use it enough, the grinding action of the cube will actually wear away some of the plastic and it will become looser. As this happens, you should clean out the inside of the cube because a black plastic dust will build up there. Clean it out with paper towel and water.
The more you go without lubing, the more plastic will wear away and the smoother the cube will be on a regular basis. As a rule, you should only lube if you have a competition or other such event that you are really concerned about speed for. That way your cube gets very loose.
But there is such a thing as TOO loose. Eventually, if you don't start lubing, pieces will literally fall off while you use it... its kinda funny to watch a cube in that state... they go really fast though...
basically, when it starts to get REALLY easy to remove pieces, start lubing. When you get to this point, use silicon spray or any moisturizing hand cream. Just take the cube apart and put a few dabs on the axis.
Happy Cubing!

As previously stated, don't lubricate it too soon after buying it. You need to get it all smoothed out. After a while, use the silicone spray. If that doesn't work, another lubricant I'm trying, and it's working amazingly well, is Teflon. The stuff they use on pans and stuff, to make sure food doesn't stick. My cube is SO loose right now, that I can turn it with my pinky finger. Just a suggestion, I'm still waiting for the long-term effects, but it seems to work amazingly.

Since you have a new Rubik's Cube, I would suggest play with it for about two weeks. After that, use silicon (best) or vaseline to lubricate your cube.
