If anything, those yuppies should be looking up to me for the simple fact that I, a mature, responsible, hard-working individual is paying her OWN way through a Bachelor's degree in Biology. What baffles me the most is the fact that these people don't seem to have any amount of common sense of the way the world works, as though education and nice cars drop from the sky. For example, I'm asking you if you want fries with that because (you f'cking moron) my boss told me to upsell. To make the company more money. Because it's retail, and no one actually cares if you'll enjoy those fries or not. Cumulatively, the more people buy those fries, the more money comes rolling in. Your Philosophy and Women's Lit degrees didn't teach you this? Shucks. Anyone else have any pet peeves regarding these "lowly" jobs some of you may have worked or are working when it came to other people's attitudes?

I work retail and it always amazes me that people can be so rude and not care about anyone but themselves...

It's a service industry so we are here to "serve" the general public... So, some people think it's ok to be rude, or mean to someone that's purpose is to HELP you. It's a power thing to most people to complain about everything to get what you want when generally if you ask nicely you can get better service hands down !

I've found if you're really sickly nice and sweet that it's better than having a scowl and getting upset.. After all what are "they" going to complain about that you were being "too nice !" ? It works for me... Now if you'll excuse me I have to get ready for work !

Good luck

calm down. That's just the way it is. btw, what do you have against philosophy degree people? I am one. and I am a very nice and humble person.
I have been in your situation, and as a matter of fact, still am. haha! Our society respects money, fame, maybe even a bit of beauty, and in some occasions knowledge.

While you may have some of these things, you aren't able to show them at your retail job. Simply put, you are there to provide service. A service that is very basic., which does not require much skill. For that reason, they automatically assume that you are not a smart person.
I've found that in retail business, the clientell is comprised of bimbos, as we all know that bimbos and airheads shop more than others. haha!!!! So, don't worry. who cares what these shallow people think, or if they look down on your or up. Who cares.
Just be proud of who you are, and don't give up. Work hard and get that degress. When you get rich, be nice to those who are in the situation that you once were.

I've worked at those types of jobs and it's a shame so many people look down on them. They seem to think that somehow their boring office jobs make them superior to people who work in fast food and retail. What they often don't realize is that much of the time, their jobs won't really lead them anywhere in their careers and those who work in the "lowly" jobs do get promotions and often are able to establish valuable business and personal contacts. You don't get that kind of experience from sitting in an office all day where you're not really interacting with anyone else aside from the people you work with.

Yes you are so right, some people and sadly most people have this need to look down upon others. That person serving you your fries you have no idea what they are about, going thru, or how incredible intelligent they may be. These are the same people who will look down on a homeless person as nothing more than a crazy drug attack, never taking into account where there life may have taken them or what they have gone thru. Sorry but this is also one of my pet peeves as I worked in retail in a very rich community and dealing with those people everyday made me want to puke. I did this to save up to go to nursing school full time but they just saw me as a lowly cashier who had nothing better to do than be talked down to. grrrrrr Whats that saying about its easier for a camel to make it thru the eye of a needle than a rich man to make it to heaven. he he very true.

I worked in retail for 20 years and the fact that people think you are **** has always mad me sooo mad. But I got a new job as a Front office clerk in a big company-NO ONE who works there will even SPEAK to me and half won't even LOOK at me....so after my first week of being invisible I decided to speak to them-and they looked at me like a deer in headlights and it took everything they had to speak back. Then one of the guys came out to get me to fax something for him and he called me by the old clerks name like 3 times. Isn't that pathetic. This is just a job to get me by for awhile -I have a BS in Marketing and haven't made this little amount of money in 15 years. I am more intellegent and attractive than almost all of those people.

The only answer to this Q is that it must be that you, yourself look down upon certain occupations. I worked myself through college; graduate school and feel thankful that there are those jobs that afford a person at least a minimal living!! I've had a couple of glasses of wine, so don't quite understand your Q--BUT, feel GOOD about what your are doing and WHO YOU ARE!! This is a stepping stone to where you want to go!! Good Luck!!

You shouldn't take it so personally. People are jerks, and they always will be. Working and going to school at the same time is a lot of work and I actually admire those who do that. (I'm not one of them). Just because someone's parents or whomever pays for their school, doesn't mean they are all like that. Don't stereotype, because it sounds like that is exactly what people are doing to you. Anyways, good luck with school and all. I used to work in retailing. Just ignore those people.

I'm a doctor of pharmacy working in a retail pharmacy and I have the same problem. Some people are overly demanding and degrading. It's like they all feel they are entitled to have their butts kissed and when they don't they feel like they are being cheated or conspired against, as if I even have time for that. My solution is to just ignore them. You only have to deal with them for a few minutes. They have to deal with themselves every hour of everyday.

People act like that because they can, and no one employed in retail is going to say anything about it because it's their job to be nice to you and make sure you get what you want. They take advantage of the situation in order to make themselves feel superior, they must not be getting any respect at home.

i dont know why people are so disrespectful to those of us that work in retail and fast food. we are doing the jobs that they themselves dont want to do, and if it wasnt for retail where would they get the things they need.
what i really hate is when people walk up to me and say "finally, someone who speaks english!" everyone i work with speaks english, but people assume that because they are a different nationality that they dont know the language
