I'm working on a novel and I want to get the copyrights so if I submit it to publishers they can not steal my story. How do I go about doing that or do I have to pay?

Thanks for the help.

You own your copyright from the moment you create a piece of writing. It costs money to register your copyright, but while you're working on your book, that's not a necessary expense. You think your work is brilliant and priceless (and you should think that), but if you submit to reputable publishers, they're really not going to try to steal it. They know the law, and it's in their best interests to play fair. Here's a government site with more information on copyright law:

i have been thinking about doing the same thing and looking at the other answers i guess if you write this on your pc then you can burn it on a dvd with dates etc
when its printed off put it in an envelope with some form of date reference if you could get some one to sign a piece of paper as well ie the more evidence you can put in an envelope the better then address it to yourself and post it once you have received it then store it some where safe but do not open it you may need this if you get problems and a judge is the one to open it if that time comes

I think the fact that you have written it makes it come under copyright laws. It also depends what country you live in as some don't recognise copyrights at all

You have to go to the copy write web page and print the application for novels. Then fill it out and submit the fee to them.

Mail the manuscript to yourself by registered mail. That way your work is stored in an official, date stamped and signed envelope which proves you had it before anyone else did.
