Can someone please help me with the Charlemagne Kingdom?
This is what I need help with:
Which ruler felt they were the rightful ruler of the Roman Empire?
Which of Charlemagne's accomplishments had the most lasting importance? And Why?
What would be one result of splitting Charles' kingdom?
(P.S. I DID look these up on Google, and in my text book but couldn't find all of the answers.)

Well, the Pope was the one who claimed the right to rule the western empire. This was through a forged document known as the Donation of Constantine. The idea behind it being that the Emperor Constantine had given the right to rule the Western Empire in gratitude for having cured him of leprosy.

The establishment of the feudal state was probably the most lasting legacy. He established a model upon which future government in Europe was based. Although the elimination of unorthodox faiths would also be an important contribution as well. There were heretical movements that were attacked by the Church in later years, while the feudal system lasted clear through the 15th century.

The splitting of Charles' kingdom, as was done by his son Louis the Pious following his own death, was the creation of a conflict that divided Europe clear into the 20th century. Louis divide the empire between his three sons, and the result was predictable, one son or the other would try to reunite the kingdom as his own. The French, Germans and Austrians fought this battle over and over for the next thousand years.

The first link is to New Advent on the Donation of Constantine and the second concerns Charlemagne.

In the end, it did not matter. Charlemagne was crowned Roman Emperor on Christmas Day, 800. These people intended that Charlemagne should be the successor of Justinian and Caesar Augustus. At that moment, the Byzantine empire was in distant Constantinople. There was an empress Irene who ruled alone in those days. There was talk that Charlemagne might marry Irene. Northing came of it. Also, there is talk these days about a Carolingian renaissance. Supposedly there were scholars at court who spoke Latin. Charlemagne himself learned to write is name unsing a pen and a stencil.
