How do I go about getting a job as a cake decorator? Getting some sort of a degree in Bakery/Pastry?? Anyone been down the road?

This is a career change for me.

Thanks.

I don't think you can actually go to a college for cake decorating specifically, but you can go to a food school for a Pastry Chef.
There are also classes that you can take at Michael's which is big craft store. I'm not sure if they are located all around the country or only certain places. There are 3 different classes which are once a week for a month for each class. As you go through them you get certificates and that may help you to get a job. Although I have met women that just practiced and got a job doing it without any classes or anything. It all depends on where you want to get a job and how good you are. Good luck!

those wilton classes given at micheals and hobby lobby are not the way to go!!
You need to get a job as a bakery clerk and learn there and practice at home alot. Those classes are meant to teach you to decorate at home for special occasions meaning making one cake at a time. To be a cake decorator you must be able to make sometimes 40 to 50 cakes in an 8 hour shift. You can not expect to just get a job as a cake decorator , this is a learned trade that takes time. Start with a local grocery store or bakery and see if they would hire you as a clerk and you can learn on the job. Good Luck!!

you could go to culinary school and get a degree in cake decorating. but if you already have some skills, even if you havent been formally trained, i would just go and apply at the bakeries you might be interested in working at. even some of the regional retail grocery stores have cake decorators.
just ask to demonstrate your skills and technique and it's easy to get work.

my cousin just got a job like that at safeway a few months back and she didnt go to school either.

culinary school :o) ooor just start working dishes in a local bakery... ambitious/ competent people move up. my mom worked nothing but waitressing and cleaning before she did retail at a very popular local gourmet deli/bakery chain and now she's right hand to the head chief.
