I think Winnipeg should deserve a team. They are crazy about hockey up there. It really is not far to them that most other big cities in Canada get a team and they don't. If Phoenix gets a team, they should.

LITY- the new Winnipeg arena is bigger than the old one isn't it? (even though it is not big) I am not positive but it has to be be. So there is some of the windfall. Add the increased ticket prices. Add the Canadian dollar which IS HUGE but albeit an unsteady thing on which to rely however there is a a big difference between getting 60 cents on the dollar and getting 1 dollar on the dollar.
In fact, most of the money the money the NHL is making in the NHL these days can be attributed to this fact.
So I think it "could" work IF the dollar were to stay strong. I think it is viable.

Neither Winnipeg nor Hartford has the corporate infrastructure in place to support a team.
Winnipeg sold out the arena...but still lost gazillions, and that was on a $20MM payroll.
Bob
The new arena is slightly smaller (200 or so seats). Even with the upswing in the dollar I'm not so sure the dollars are there. Based on any math I've heard, Winnipegers would have the highest ticket prices in the league.
Phoenix/Glendale is just a huge mistake. Gretzky's a bright guy, but Ellman's decision to build a rink in Glendale rather than downtown is killing that team, and I question how much longer they will be there. They have great corporate sponsorship, but haven't had a sell-out in ages.

Have Bill DeWitt (part owner of the St. Louis Cardinals) make the RIGHT choice back in the NHL-WHA merger and keep Mark Messier and the Cincinnati Stingers, instead of taking the buyout!

As pointed out, Winnipeg might have the fans, but they can't support a NHL Franchise (nor can Hartford).
I still think Toronto should have a second team (in Toronto, not in Hamilton).

You what the NHLs major problem is, they look outside of the NHL way too much, where can we move teams, who doesnt deserve teams, where can we put new teams. Get the current a$&bag commissioner out, get a hockey man in there, stablize the teams you have now, or even contract down two to four teams for now. If the league doesnt want another lockout they need to stablize, not increase in size.

Toronto....Seriously, let the teacher's union keep the Leafs, and give the City a real franchise to play hockey, not just make money.
