-3x = 5x + 2
-3x - 5x = 5x - 5x + 2
-8x = 0 + 2
-8x / -8 = +2 / -8
x = -1/4
x = - 0.25

This is pretty simple stuff.
What we need to do is get all terms with an x on one side, and all without on the other.
What we can do is simply subtract 5x from both sides, which gives us:
-8x=2
Now to get x by itself, we divide both sides by -8
x=2/-8
2/-8 can be simplified to -1/4
so:
x=-1/4

answer: .25?
my algebra teacher says to get the variables on one side so you would subtract 5x on each side. that would be -8x=2
so then you divinde each side by -8x. that leaves us with 2 divided by -8 which gives us x =.25

add 3x to both sides to get
0 = 8x + 2
then subtract 2 from both sides
8x = -2
then divide both sides by 8
x = -1/4
voila! QED
