First, purchase 200 gallons of clear plastic resin. Mixs it up and submerge the entire tree in it. When it cures, your tree will last for thousands of years. If you are smart, you will have already decorated it and killed two birds with one stone, as you won't have to continually take decorations off and [put them back on the next year. Additionally, it willl be child-animal proof, the cats can climb it all day and night and it'l never fall over or get shredded and all over the house. You will have eliminated falling needles, broken ddcorations, and watering. Resin encapsulated trees require NO cleaning beyhond a feather duster and maybe a damp rag once a year. the only drawback will be replacing burnt out lights but if you're ingenius enough that too can be overcome. If it's a natural tree, keep it watered every day. My mother also used to add something called "prolong" to the water. I think the ratio is 1/2 water, 1/2 this prolong additive. Also, try not to weigh down the branches too much with heavy ornaments -- simple glass balls and lightweight strings of lights, maybe some ribbons. Nothing more than a few grams of ornaments per branch. also, tucking the lights in about halfway down in the branches toward the core will take some weight off the needles where the ornaments are -- the strength of the branches is stronger the closer you are to the core, so tucking the lights in does well at taking weight off.

Artificial trees are pretty low-maintenence, but it's still best to keep the ornaments as lightweight and as dispersed as possible, cos weighing down the branches will mean you'll have to replace it sooner (say, in five or six years rather than ten).

Lay it down in the garden for the cold/frost to get it. This ensures the needles stay on better in our warm homes. Put it up 7-10 days before christmas day. Then make sure it's watered every day. This way it should look good on the day!
